Weakened US research: a concerted action plan with partner universities
Faced with the growing threats to scientific research in the United States, the ±«²Ô¾±±¹±ð°ù²õ¾±³Ùé Paris Sciences & Lettres (PSL) is making a commitment to support vulnerable researchers and is stepping up its collaboration in four strategic areas: Artificial Intelligence - Climate Sciences - Health and Social Sciences & Humanities.
In partnership with American and European academic institutions, the university is putting in place a series of concrete measures to ensure the continuity of endangered scientific work: creation of 15 Research Fellowships, funding of post-doctorates and accommodation for researchers.
In addition to the researchers themselves, the entire economic model of American research is under threat. This is a serious situation, and the shock waves have only just begun. It was imperative that we take the time to reflect on the situation and find appropriate solutions in consultation with our American colleagues.
The strength of the collaboration between the scientific teams in our two countries has enabled us to target the most critical needs and respond with appropriate measures: the research fellows programme, post-doctorates and the discussions underway with our European partners are just the first steps in this joint initiative between our 13 institutions.»
El Mouhoub Mouhoud, president of the ±«²Ô¾±±¹±ð°ù²õ¾±³Ùé Paris Sciences & Lettres (PSL)
Supporting scientific continuity: 15 Research Fellows and dedicated post-doctorates
Faced with the drastic reduction in federal funding and the increased taxation of endowments in the United States, which are having a heavy impact on the research activities of American universities, PSL University is mobilising to support scientific continuity in priority areas that are under threat.
Existing mechanisms for international collaboration (PhD Tracks, PSL global seed fund, Visiting Fellow, Chairs…) and two new programmes dedicated to affected researchers will be launched:
- Research Fellows Programme - AI - Health - Climate and Social Sciences & Humanities: 15 researchers will be welcomed to continue their scientific work in France in collaboration with academic partners
- Post-doctorates integrated into the 14 Major Research Programmes: young researchers will be recruited as part of this new scientific initiative launched in January by the University.
The aim of this initiative is to welcome and support researchers of excellence, by fostering a stable academic environment conducive to international collaboration.
Strengthened academic partnerships for a tailored response
Since the first restrictive measures came into force, PSL University has worked closely with its American partners to ensure that it is as close as possible to the communities affected. Together, they have been able to draw on well-established collaborations to identify critical situations and respond in the most appropriate way. The University of Chicago and Rice University, both PSL partners with branches in Paris, were among the first to respond to PSL's proposal. They will strengthen their collaboration around our identified priority themes, including climate, social sciences and humanities, and health.... They will benefit from the facilities offered by their Paris branches, and from the pooling of existing co-financing. In this respect, several mechanisms will be mobilised for co-financing, in particular the respective seed funds of PSL and Rice, or the IIRP Faculty Grants of Chicago, in order to facilitate the hosting of researchers in PSL University laboratories. Other academic partnerships could soon follow suit.
This concerted approach is intended to be part of a global, long-term process. In addition to its American partners, PSL intends to contribute to a broader response to the threats to the independence of research and academic freedom around the world. PSL is therefore working with its European partners and is in dialogue with the European Commission, in order to contribute to the construction of a strong European Research Area, imbued with shared values and offering the researchers affected an attractive working environment.
